Abstract

PURPOSE: To form flat weld beads free from insufficient penetration, etc. by maintaining a welding torch at a fixed height from the surface of welding base metal and controlling welding speed, etc. according to the differences between reference welding current and actual welding current so as not to produce undulations in bead height.
CONSTITUTION: A motor 26 is driven by the signal from a face tracing mechanism 25 which detects the undulations of a base metal surface 3 to elevate a welding head 11 by a screw mechanism 27, thereby holding a welding torch 12 at a fixed height from the base metal surface. The height position of the welding torch 12 is so set in a welding head height setting part 31 that the welding wire 8 end leaves from the reference plane A of weld beads 5 by the specified distance. On the other hand, the welding wire is fed at a constant speed by using a DC power source of constant voltage characteristics and therefore the welding speed is increased or decreased by the increase or decrease in the welding current so as not to produce concave and convex parts a and b of the beads 5.
