PURPOSE:To increase the detection sensitivity by timingly changing the sensitivity of photo electric conversion element through the use of laser echo as trigger. CONSTITUTION:As the photo electric conversion element, the photo electric multiplier 9 is used, and it is connected to the bias power supply 10, amplifier 11, trigger detection circuit 12, ramp waveform generating circuit 13, and time difference detction circuit 14. Thus, the laser light emitted from the pulse laser unit 1 and reflected from the sea surface vertically emitted on it with the transmission optical system, is received to the photo electric multiplier 9 via the reception optical system, capacitor lens, and interference filter without attenuation. The echo signal is detected stably without excessive input state, and after amplification, it is fed to the trigger detection circuit 12, the first pulse is outputted at the time, the ramp waveform generation circuit 13 is triggered, the time difference detection circuit 14 is started, the bias voltage to the photo electric multiplier 9 is increased in ramp function, the bothe circuits 13 and 14 are reset and stopped with the echo signal after that, and the output of the circuit 14 gives water depth.
