Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a raw material for pharmaceuticals and perfumes industrially advantageously, by reacting styrene with a lower monohydric alcohol in the presence of a palladium and a copper slats in an ether solvent in the atmosphere of oxygen.
CONSTITUTION: Styrene is reacted with a lower monohydric alcohol, preferably 1W2C, in the presence of a palladium and a copper slats, preferably at a weight ratio of palladium chloride to cupric chloride of 1:1W1:3, in an ether solvent, e.g. tetrahydrofuran, in the atmosphere of oxygen at 10W70°C. Preferably, the amount of the palladium salt is 0.002W0.1M (mol/l) based on the total weight of the solvent and the alcohol, and the solvent is used in a larger volume than the alcohol.
