Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent a composite roll from cracking owing to flattening of graphite, in manufacture of the roll consisting of an Adamite material outer shell and a nodular graphite cast iron inner shell by centrifugal casting, by adding Mg a alloy to the Adamite material to leave residual Mg.
CONSTITUTION: A roll for a universal mill is manufactured as a composite roll consisting of an Adamite material outer shell and a nodular graphite cast iron inner shell by centrifugal casting. The outer shell material is iron of high hardness Adamite material having superior wear resistance and contg. C 1.0W2.8%, Si 0.2W 2%, Mn 0.3W1.5%, Ni 0.2W5.0% and Cr 0.2W3.0%. Before or after solidifying the inside of the outer shell the nodular graphite cast iron inner shell is cast to manufacture the composite roll. At this time, by adding a Mg alloy such as Ni-Mg to molten Adamite material 0.001W0.05% of residual Mg is left. Abnormal graphite layers 3 are formed in outer shell 1 near boundary 4 between shell 1 and inner shell 2 to prevent the roll from cracking.
