Abstract

PURPOSE:Secondary air is supplied to the upstream of the ternary catalyst in reference to the idle signal and the water temperature signal to decrease a volume of discharge of CO by utilizing a diaphragm type air pump to be driven by the output from the change-over valve having a pulsating phase between the cylinders. CONSTITUTION:When a negative pressure is transmitted to the diaphragm chamber 51, the diaphragm 54 is moved upwardly. When the output from the change-over valve is varied to an atomspheric pressure, the diaphragm chamber 51 is set to the atmospheric pressure, the diaphragm 54 is pushed down by the spring 53, a pressure is applied to the pumping chamber 59, the check valve 57 at the intake side is closed, the check valve 58 at the discharge side of opened, and the secondary air is fed to the upstream of the ternary catalyst via discharge port 56 in the pumping chamber 59. Said operation system is operated by utilizing a pulsating phase between the cylinders of the dischrge system, and also may be operated by utilizing the cylinders of the intake system.
