Abstract

PURPOSE: To cheaply produce high purity cryolite contg. no silica by reacting a dissolved silica-contg. soln. of a fluoride and sodium aluminate at above a specified temp. in the presence of CO2 gas or a CO3 2--contg. water sol. cpd.
CONSTITUTION: A dissolved silica-contg. soln. of a fluoride such as NH4F or NaF and a soln. of NaAlO2 are reacted at above 60°C in the presence of CO2 gas or a CO3 2--contg. water sol. cpd. such as (NH4)2CO3. When the gas or the cpd. is used in an amt. above 0.1, esp. 0.2W3g as CO2 to 100g of the solns., coarse cryolite contg. very little silica is crystallized. By maintaining the concn. of F in supernatant after the reaction at 2W4, esp. 3.5W3.8g/l, cryolite of esp. low silica content is obtd.
