USE: An amino acid having a physiological activity, and useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of antibiotic cycloserine or a sulfur-containing amino acid cysterine.
PROCESS: Chloroacetaldehyde (C) is reacted with a bisulfite or sulfite to give an aqueous solution of the addition product, which is reacted with ammonia to form α-amino-β-chloroethanesulfonic acid or its salt (A). The acid or salt (A) is then reacted with hydrocyanic acid or a cyanide in an organic solvent or its mixture with water. The organic layer is separated, and hydrogen chloride gas is introduced into the layer to crystallize and collect the title substance as the hydrochloride.
