Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate isobutylene from C4-olefin mixture, economically, easily, in high purity, by using Y-type synthetic zeolite substituted with Li or Cs ions as an adsorbent.
CONSTITUTION: Isobutylene is separated from a mixture of C4-olefins containing isobutylene, butene-1, butene-2, etc., by the use of a synthetic zeolite adsorbent having Y-type structure wherein major part of Na is substituted with Li or Cs cations. The substitution with cation can be carried out by contacting the synthetic zeolite with an aqueous solution of a soluble metal salt. The size of the adsorbent is from 2 microns to a 1/3 inch pellet containing an inorganic binder.
EFFECT: Very high degree of separation. The absence of sulfuric acid in the process reduces the capital cost of the plant, and facilitates the operation. Since the separation is performed only by adsorption, the purity of the product is high.
