Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate p-xylene, selectively and efficiently, which is a raw material for the production of terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephtalate, a raw material of polyesters, from a mixture containing xylene isomers, by using new adsorbent comprising L-type synthetic zeolite.
CONSTITUTION: p-Xylene is separated from a mixture of xylene isomers b contacting the mixture with a solid adsorbent comprising an L-type synthetic zeolite having compostiton of formula (M is cation such as Na, K; n is its valence number) or a modified L-type synthetic zeolite obtained by substituting the alkali metal ion of the above zeolite with an alkaline earth metal ion or a rare earth metal ion. The treatment is carried out at 15-120°C. p-Xylene is desorbed from the zeolite by conventional desorption operations. L-type zeolite does not exist in nature, and is obtained, e.g. by the crystallization of a mixture of potassium aluminate and silica sol.
