Abstract

PURPOSE: To binary-code video signal stably by generating a threshold value by extracting lightness levels of a peak or valley from lightness frequency distribution found by respective scanning lines and then by extracting those levels by a fixed number of scanning lines.
CONSTITUTION: Video signal 3 from pickup unit 2 taking a sequential scan in two dimensions is converted into a digital signal by A/D converting circuit 4. The frequency distribution of values corresponding to lightness levels of every scanning line is obtained by the digital signal, values corresponding to lightness levels showing the peak or valley of the frequency distribution are detected, and the frequency distribution of values corresponding to the lightness levels showing the peak or valley is found extending over many scanning lines. Digital signals of the light levels showing the peak or valley of the frequency distribution are converted by D/A converting circuit 17 into analog signals, by which video signals are binary-coded to obtain picture elements and on the basis of the two-dimensional binary picture-element signals, the shape, position, etc., of a pattern are recognized or checked.
