Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover the reaction heat efficiently from the waste gas of a formaldehyde production plant, by reacting the gas catalytically with a necessary minimum amount of air under specific conditions, thereby burning the inflammable components of the gas and raising the gas temperature to the level adequate for the heat recovery.
CONSTITUTION: Catalytic oxidation of the waste gas exhausted from the production process of formaldehyde, consisting mainly of H2 and CO, and added with 1.0W5.0 times volume of air, is carried out, by contacting the gas adiabatically with a noble metal (e.g. platimum, palladium, etc.) catalyst at a space velocity of 10,000W 100,000 1/hr and at a gas temperature at the inlet side of the catalyst layer, of 0W 200°C, to burn the inflammable components, e.g. H2, CO, etc., in the waste gas, safely and completely. The gas temperature at the outlet side of the catalyst layer is thereby increased to 600W800°C and the hot gas is introduced into a heat exchanger to effect the heat-exchange economically.
