Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide title compsn. having good curing characteristics and heat resistance, by a method wherein a novolak derived from phenol, formaldehyde and resorcinol is reacted with an epihalohydrin and the resulting epoxy-novolac resin is blended with a hardener.
CONSTITUTION: At least one phenol such as phenol, cresol, or isopropylphenol is reacted with form aldehyde in the presence of an alkali at a temp. of 40W150°C to obtain a resol type precondensate which is then reacted with resorcinol at a temp. of 70W140°C to obtain a novolak. An epihalohydrin is added to the novolak in an amount of 2W10mol, pref. 5W7mol per one hydroxyl gq. of the novolak. The mixt. is subjected to a dehalogenation-ring closure reaction in the presence of an alkali catalyst at a temp. of 20W120°C to obtain a novolak type epoxy resin. The epoxy resin is blended with a hardener such as amine hardener to obtain the desired resin compsn.
