Abstract

PURPOSE: To simplify a copper manufacturing process and reduce the cost by blowing air or O2-enriched air into a smelting furnace charged with copper starting material and a flux; smelting the material at a predetermined high temp. or above to manufacture high grade matte; and converting the matte into crude copper in a converter.
CONSTITUTION: Copper sulfide concentrate of sulfide ore such as chalcopyrite is charged into a flash smelting furnace together with an SiO2-base flux, and by blowing air in a volume slightly larger than a conventional volume or O2-enriched air the concentrate is smelted at a molten metal temp. of 1,300°C or above. The furnace is required to improve its incidental facilities by intensively cooling the wall, using high quality refractory brick and other method. The resulting high grade matte having a copper grade of 65Walmost 80% is charged into a converter, where it is converted into crude copper having, a copper grade of about 98% only by feeding air or O2-enriched air without carrying out a conventional slagging stage.
