Abstract

PURPOSE: The extract from microalgae is treated with a mixed solvent system consisting of a hydrophilic and another hydrophobic organic solvents which boil at temperatures lower than a specific one and are immiscible with each other, whereby natural chlorophyll and carotinoid pigments are simultaneously isolated.
CONSTITUTION: Microalgae are treated with a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon to obtain a pasty extract containing chlorophyll and carotinoids. The extract is dissolved in a mixed solvent system consisting of (A) a hydrophobic solvent boiling at a temperature of lower than 150°C, preferably n-hexane, butyl acetate or the like, and (B) another hydrophilic organic solvent boiling at a temperature of lower than 150°C, preferably acetone, methanol or the like, when necessary, an additional solvent which separates the above two solvents into different layers such as water. Then, the chlorophyll is obtained from the layer A and carotinoids from the layer B simultaneously.
