Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title dinitrile in high yield, by reacting an α,ω-aliphatic long-chain dibasic acid or its diamide with ammonia in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An α,ω-aliphatic long-chain dibasic acid of formula I (n is integer 6W10) or an α,ω-aliphatic long-chain dibasic acid amide of formula II is reacted with ammonia to give an α,ω-aliphatic long-chain dinitrile compound, e.g. suberonitrile dodecanenitrile or sebaconitrile. An aluminum salt, e.g. basic aluminum acetate or aluminum isopropoxide, capable of readily forming aluminum soap by melting with a dibasic acid under heating is used as a catalyst in an amount of 0.01W5mol% based on the compound of formula I or II. The formation of tarry polymers can be extremely reduced with a high yield of the compound of formula III.
