Abstract

PURPOSE:To manufacture reducing metallic powder as high performance magnetic recording powder in mass production in an industrical scale by reducing fine particles of iron compound powder with reducing gas containing hydrogen as reducing component. CONSTITUTION:alpha-Fe2O3, gamma-Fe2O3, and iron formate powder or the like are reduced in contact with reducing gas such as pure hydrogen gas or the like under reducing conditions of 0.05-50kg/cm<2> of pressure, 150-500 deg.C, preferably 200- 450 deg.C of temperature. In this case the reducing gas is flowed at an air tower linear speed of 1-20cm/sec., and the stock material is stirred. Thus, the reducing gas is dispersibly retained in the powder to form a mixture of uniform powder and reducing gas of viscosity much lower than the sole powder over the entire reaction period. The magnetic properties of the obtained reduced metallic iron is excellent with less irregular quality.
