Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain corresponding high-purity p-anisidines in high yields by electrolytically reducing o-substituted nitrobenzenes using a mixed solvent of a specified composition and specified electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: In a mixed solvent consisting of, by wt., methanol about 40W80%, sulfuric acid about 15W40% and water and/or acetic acid about 2W25% o-substituted nitrobenzenes are electrolytically reduced. A carbon electrode is used as a cathode, and a platinum electrode or a carbon electrode as an anode. Desired p- anisidines are isolated as follows: methanol is distilled from the mixed reaction product, and the residue is extracted with ethyl acetate or the like, dried, and distilled after removing the ethyl acetate. By this method 2-methyl-4-methoxyaniline and 2,3- dimethyl-4-methoxyaniline are obtd. from o-nitrotoluene and 2,3-dimethylnitrobenzene, respectively without forming a by-product in high yields.
