PURPOSE:To provide a multicomponent glass fiber for the light transmission with reduced alkali elution, excellent weather resistance, dimensional stability and remarkably improved durable life or the like, comprising a multicomponent glass for a core portion and a multicomponent glass for a clad layer with a reduced alkali content. CONSTITUTION:A multicomponent glass fiber for a step-type light transmission formed from (A) a multicomponent glass for a core portion comprising 55-65wt% (hereinafter %) of SiO2, which may be replaced by GeO2 within a range of 30% or less, 0.5-7% of Al2O3, 10-20% of an alkali metal oxide, 0-7% of CaO, 10-20% of a total amount of SrO and BaO, 0-10% of B2O3 and 0-5% of MgO, and (B) a multicomponent glass for a clad layer comprising 60-80% of SiO2, 0.5-10% of Al2O3, 9-17% of an alkali metal oxide, 0-5% of CaO, 0-7% of one or more of a component selected from ZnO, ZrO2, and TiO2, 0-4% of MgO and 10-15% of B2O3.
