PURPOSE:To provide a multicomponent glass fiber for the light transmission with reduced alkali elution, excellent weather resistance, dimensional stability and remarkably improved durable life or the like, comprising a multicomponent glass for a core portion and a multicomponent glass for a clad layer with a reduced alkali content. CONSTITUTION:A multicomponent glass fiber for a step-type light transmission formed from (A) a multicomponent glass for a core portion comprising SiO2; 40- 80wt% (hereinafter %), which may be replaced by GeO2 within a range of 30% or less, Al2O3; 0.5-7%, an alkali metal oxide: 10-23%, CaO; 0-12%, ZrO2; 1-12%, B2O3; 0-15% and MgO; 0-5%, and (B) a multicomponent glass for a clad layer comprising SiO2; 60-80%, Al2O3; 0.5-10%, an alkali metal oxide; 9-17%, CaO; 0-5%, one or more of a component selected from ZnO, ZrO2, and TiO2; 0-7%, MgO; 0-4% and B2O3; 10-15%.
