Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce self-starting force freely and use the driving force of wind effectively by providing vanes made of a flexible material, whose angles of elevation can be freely varied according to the direction of wind at a position behind the rear end of vane rods to the rotational directuon connected to a vertical shaft.
CONSTITUTION: A suitable number of vanes 4 are provided at equal intervals on a circumference concentric with the center of vertical shaft 3. Each vane 4 consists of vane rod 6 with stream-lined cross section, and thin vane plate 7 made of a flexible member extending backward from the back edge of its rotational direction. Vane rod 6 is fastened to vertical shaft 3 via supporting arm 5. On the side C, which is in the same side as the rotational direction B of the windmill with respect to the direction of wind A, due to the bending of vane plate 7, the angle of elevation with respect to the wind is large and the driving force becomes large, while on the opposite side D, the resultant drive force becomes small. Since the difference between the resultant forces on sides C and D is large, and further, since the structure of vane 4 is simple and light in weight, self-motive force is produced even at the time of very weak wind, so that the drive force of wind can be utilized efficiently.
