Abstract

PURPOSE: To directly cool vertical thrust bearing of, for instance, a hydraulic turbine generator and remove heat generated from the frictional surface of the bearing by supplying a cooling medium and reduce loss of the bearing.
CONSTITUTION: A cooling medium is supplied to directly cooled stationary plates 11 and 12 from the leading side with respect to the rotation and is exhausted from the trailing side. Cooling medium ring headers 16 and 17 provided within a bearing tank 7 are coupled a medium inlet main 15a, a medium output main 15b and also to the stationary plates 11 and 12, and the inflow and outflow directions 14a and 14b of the cooling medium with respect to the stationary plates 11 and 12 are switched according to the direction N of rotation of the shaft through the on-off switching of automatic control valves 18a and 18b.
