Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent surface cracks of billets by cooling and recuperating the surface layer parts of the steel cast billets containing Nb and V through repetition of plural times respectively at the specific temperatures in the secondary cooling zone.
CONSTITUTION: In the continuous casting operation of the molten steel containing one or more kinds of Nb, V normally within a range of 0.02 to 0.2wt%, cooling- recuperation are repeated more than twice in the secondary cooling zone so as to provide temperature at the cooling of cast billet surface layer parts ( ≤ 10mm ); ≤ Ar1, recuperation temperature; Ac3 thru Ac3 + 100°C. This fines the austenite particle sizes of the cast billet surface layer parts down to 0.2 mm or under, suppresses the grain goundary deposition of carbide and nitride such as Nb(NC), V(NC), etc. and suppresses the deposition of film-form pro-eutectoid ferrite along the austenite grain boundary at the successive γ-α transformation, thereby enabling the surface cracks of the cast billet to be prevented.
