Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polyester resin having improved impact resistance and shrink characteristics, by a method wherein an isocyanate-terminated prepolymer is reacted with an unsaturated monomer having isocyanate-reactive gp. to obtain an oligomer which is then added to a polyester resin.
CONSTITUTION: An isocyanate-terminated prepolymer resulting from the reaction of an org. diisocyanate with a polyol having an average equivalent of 300W4000 in an equivalent ratio of NCO to OH of 1.02/1W1.6/1, is reacted with an unsaturated monomer having isocyanate-reactive gp. to obtain a polyurethane oligomer modifier having final free NCO content of 0W1%. The oligomer modifier is added to a thermosetting polyester resin compsn. consisting of a polyester resin, a catalyst and a reinforcing agent or filler. Pref. the oligomer modifier is added to the resin compsn. in an amount of 5W30pts.wt. per 100pts.wt. of the sum of polyester and a copolymerizable solvent.
