Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an optically active thiol, by the reduction of a thioester derivative given by the radical addition reaction of the vinyl ester of an optically active alcohol with thioacetic acid.
CONSTITUTION: The optically active vinyl ester of formula I (R1, R2 and R3 are H, alkyl, phenyl, etc.; R4 is an atomic group having an optically active center), is brought into radical addition reaction with thioacetic acid, in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile, etc., to give a thioester derivative of formula II. The resulting thioester derivative is reduced with lithium aluminum hydride, to prepare the optically active thiol which is the object compound of formula III. Combinations of R1, R2 and R3 enable the introduction of the optically active center into the Cα or Cβ atom arbitrarily.
