Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an optically active sulfide by the reduction of an addition reaction product of a thiol having an optically active ester group in the side-chain with an olefin compound.
CONSTITUTION: An optically active thiol of formula I (X is an atomic group having an optically active center; n is integer) is subjected to a radical addition reaction with an olefin compound, e.g. β-methylstylene or 2-methyl-2-pentene, to obtain a radical addition reaction product of formula II (R1, R2, R3 and R4 are H, alkyl, phenyl, etc.). The resulting compound is reduced with a reducing agent, e.g. lithium aluminum hydride or lithium boron hydride, to prepare an optically active sulfide of formula III, e.g. optically active α-methyl-β-phenylethyl-β-hydroxyethyl sulfide.
