Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an electrochromic display device (ECD) giving clear display at high writing-in and erasing speeds by setting a light reflecting material contg. calcium sulfate as a reflecting body for shielding an opposite electrode.
CONSTITUTION: Display electrode 3 formed on substrate 1 provided with thin film transparent electrode 2 and opposite electrode 5 are placed so that they are facing each other, light reflecting sheet 4 is set between electrodes 3, 5, and they are hermetically sealed with glass case 7 together with electrolyte 8 to form an ECD. At this time, as sheet 4 a reflecting sheet made of calcium sulfate is used. Sheet 4 is easily formed by pouring a thick aqueous dispersion of calcium sulfate into a metal mold and allowing it to stand at room temp. or heat drying it to remove the solvent. Sheet 4 is porous and has sufficient mechanical strength, high light reflectivity and superior ion conductivity. By further blending an inorg. pigment into sheet 4 enhancement in whiteness, coloration, etc. are enabled.
