PURPOSE:To correct the fluctuations in propagation speeds of ultrasonic waves based on the change in ambient temperature by changing the frequencies of a pulse generator according to ambient temperatures. CONSTITUTION:An inter-vehicle distance operating unit 8 clocks the period of the ultrasonic waves transmitted from a transmitter 2, converts these to an inter-vehicle distance and displays the same in a data display circuit 60. the propagation speed of the ultrasonic waves changes with temperature. In order to correct this, the output of a temperature setting circuit 52 is applied to a PLL circuit 53 which in turn corrects the output of an oscillator 51 and generates the clock pulses for distance operation at the frequency corresponding to the temperature. In addition, when the arithmetic circuit 8 fails to receive the receiving pulses despite the lapse of the specified time after the transmission of ultrasonic waves from the transmitter 2, it processes the inter-vehicle distance data of that time as a missing.
