Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance of metal materials having relatively large carbon content by a method wherein hard and porous boron- treated layer is formed, which is treated with chromium diffusion so that chromium is diffused and permeates porous boride layer. CONSTITUTION:Metallic material, particularly one having relatively large amount of carbon, is preliminarily treated with noraml boriding, so that porous but very hard boride layer is formed. Next, regular chromium diffusion treatment is applied, so that the porous layer is utilized to allow deep penetration of chromium, which diffusion process is normally difficult for high-carbon metal materials. The method further hardens hard boride layer while providing chromium properties of excellent resistance to heat and corrosion. Thus, metallic material is improved in corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance.
