Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce title polymer containing less catalyst residue in high yield, by a method wherein ethylene is polymerized in the presence of a specified catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Alcohol is distilled from a satd. aliph. alc. soln. of MgCl2 to deposit MgCl2, which is then dried to obtain an activated MgCl2. An aluminum halide is added to the activated MgCl2. The mixt. is ground, and suspended in a 2W10C satd. aliph. ether to treat the mixt. The resulting ether-treated solid is reacted with TiCl4. The produced solid is reacted with an organoaluminum cpd. of formula AlRnX3-n (wherein R is 1W20C alkyl; X is halogen; n is 1W2) to obtain a solid catalyst component which is then reacted with a cpd. of formula AlR3' (wherein R' is 1W20C alkyl) to obtain a catalyst. Ethylene, alone or together with an α-olefin, is polymerized in the presence of the catalyst and an inert solvent at a pressure of 1W70kg/cm2 and at a temp. of 30W80°C.
