Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an electrical contact material having superior fusion bonding resistance and workability and undergoing little abnormal consumption by adding a specified slight amt. of Co to an Ag-Cd-Sn alloy followed by internal oxidation.
CONSTITUTION: An alloy consisting of Cd 1W20%, Sn 0.1W5%, Co 0.001W0.5% and the balance Ag is refined by melting Cd and Sn in a graphite crucible and adding Co and Ag in this order followed by melting. This molten alloy is cast, and the resulting ingot is worked into predetermined form and internally oxidized at 750°C under an oxygen partial press. of 3 atm. Thus, the Cd and Sn are selectively oxidized, and the oxides are dispersed in the Ag matrix. The Co added results in grain refining after the internal oxidation, and the oxides are distributed finely and uniformly to give an electrical contact material having superior workability, fusion bonding resistance and consumption resistance.
