Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove O2 and S in crude copper and minimize formation of dross by blowing an inert gas in place of air in the overblow period of a converter process for manufacturing crude copper from copper matte.
CONSTITUTION: In the last overblow period of a process for manufacturing crude copper by air-blowing molten copper matte in a converter, an inert gas such as N2 or Ar is blown at a rate of 60W150Nm3/min for 5W10 min. O2 and residual S in crude copper react and are simultaneously removed as SO2 to enhance the quality of the copper. Since oxidation of copper does not take place in the overblow period, the temp. of molten crude copper is maintained relatively low to lower the solubilities of impurities. Attachment of dross (copper oxide) formed to the inner wall of the converter due to softening is prevented to inhibit generation of much SOx due to sudden reaction of copper matte and dross in the next matte charging. Thus, the work environment is not worsened.
