PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound which is an intermediate for syntheses of perfumes, medicines, etc. safely in high purity, by the selective reduction of 2,4- dinitrotoluene through the hydrogenation of 2,4-and 2,6-dinitrotoluene mixture in a solvent using a specific compound.
CONSTITUTION: Mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-dinitrotoluenes is reduced with sodium sulfhydrate in an alcohol or a mixed solvent of an alcohol and water preferably at 50W70°C, by which only 2,4-dinitrotoluene is reduced highly selectively and converted into an amine. The title compound of high purity is obtained by removing the amine part from the reaction mixture through acid treatment, and recrystallizing the residual non-amine part.
