Abstract
PURPOSE:To provide an alkaline battery having improved voltage and life characteristics, by making hydrophilic that specific part of polyvinyl alcohol film separator which comes into direct contact with the electrode so that bubbles do not stick to the separator. CONSTITUTION:The separator is made from polyvinyl alcohol film having a polymerization degree of 1,000-2,500, saponification degree of more than 95mol%, and thickness of 20-75mu, crosslinked by acetalization, irradiation, etc. or gelled by boric acid, borax, etc. That part 1 of the separator that comes into direct contact with the electrode undergoes treatment to be made hydrophilic. A separator film having the treated part 1 and the untreated part 2 is wound around the zinc electrode 3 to make a battery. The polyvinyl alcohol film is preferably made of one having a crystallinity, of at least 0.4, and the treatment to make hydrophilic is accomplished by dipping the specific part in a permanganate solution or applying the solution to the specific part.
