Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a raw material for a medicine, D-(+)-pantolactone, industrially advantageously, by hydrogenating an α-keto- β,β-dimethyl-γ-butyrolactone in the presence of a specific high polymer rhodium complex as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An α-keto-β,β-dimethyl-γ-butyrolactone is hydrogenated in the presence of a compound of formula I: [R1 and R3 are H or CH3; R2 is alkyl, hydroxyalkyl groups, etc.; R4 is formulas II, III, and IV: [Z is RhCl, Rh+ClO4 -, RhCl.Y, Rh+ClO4 - .Y (Y is an olefin compound coordinated with the Rh)]; m and n are numercial values to show the proportion of the units in the parentheses contained in the molecule] to give the objective compound. The method facilitates the separation and recovery of the objective compound from the catalyst in high purity and yield, and provides complete recovery of the catalyst directly reusable.
