Abstract
PURPOSE: To carry out the oxidative coupling of substituted phenols in an easily controllable reaction system, in high reaction rate, by the use of a catalyst obtained by converting a cation exchange resin to the metal-salt-type one with Na, K, Rb, Cs, etc.
CONSTITUTION: Substituted phenols such as alkylphenols, alkoxyphenols, 1-naphthol, etc. are subjected to the oxidative coupling reaction (oxidative dehydrogenation condensation) to obtain the corresponding alkyl- or alkoxy-substituted biphenoquinone, biphenols, binaphthequinones, etc. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a cation exchange resin converted to a metal salt-type one with Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr, Cu, Mn, Co, Ni, Fe, or Cr. Higher catalytic activity is obtained by the use of a resin converted to a chelate with an amino-containing compound, together with the above salt-type resin. The catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction product, and reused. No pollutions with the metals.
