Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent internal shortage and to improve charge/discharge cycle characteristics, by placing an aq. solution of water-soluble high polymer in the battery jar, inserting the electrodes in this solution, and thereafter solidifying the solution so that the end of the electrode is covered with the solidified solution. CONSTITUTION:The alkaline battery is formed by placing in a battery jar 1 a coiled electrode 5 consisting of a nickel plate 2 and a zinc plate 3 separated by a separator 4, and then closing the top opening with a sealing lid 8, which also serves as a positive terminal, through an insulating packing 7. Before placing the coiled electrode 5 in the battery jar 1, a 25% aq. solution of water-soluble high polymer such as polyethyleneglycol is placed in a small quantity (ca. 1cc). The electrode 5 is dipped in this aq. solution and then an alkaline solution is poured into the jar to form a solidified layer 6. Thus, the end of the electrode 5 is covered integrally by the solidified layer 6. This prevents the growth of electrodeposited zinc and prevent the internal shortage.
