Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve precision and efficiency of machining of a special rack by a method wherein a cylindrical work slanted at a predetermined angle against a rotary cutter is rotated about its axis, in relation to the displacement of the work relative to the cutter.
CONSTITUTION: A rotary cutter 6 having a predetermined number of cutting edges 8 on its outside peripheral surface is rotated about its axis 7 in the sense of the arrow, and displaced from the position indicated by solid lines to the position indicated by dotted lines, with the axis 7 kept slanted at a predetermined angle α against the axis 2 of a cylindrical work 1. During the displacement, the intersection of the axes 7 and 2 is displaced rightward along the axis 2 as the cutter 6 is displaced. The cutting edges 8 of the cutter 6 sequentially and alternately contact the outside peripheral surface of the work 1, at the intersection of the axes 7 and 2, forming cuts there. Thus, the outside peripheral surface of the work 1 is formed with teeth 3, the number of which corresponds to that of the cutting edges 8 of the cutter 6.
