Abstract

PURPOSE: To suppress the heat input at the butt end parts and prevent or suppress the shrinkage of the weld end parts by making the width of the gaps for exposing the butt parts of clamping jigs which press the both sides of the butt parts of the materials to be welded smaller at the end parts than at the central parts.

CONSTITUTION: Clamping jigs 13 press the both sides of the butt parts 4 by leaving a gap 6 for exposing the butt parts 4 of the materials to be welded 3. The materials to be welded 3 being held butted at the portions to be welded are fixed and held to a base plate 1 or backing strip 2. The jigs 13 have the portions 15 overhanging from the end parts of the portions 4 and these are usually not in contact with the materials to be welded 3. The gap widths a, b, c of the central parts 16, both end parts 14 and overhang parts 15 of the butt parts, e.g., weld line are made a>b>c. The portions of the jigs 13 opposing to the end parts 14 are inclined to form tapered parts 17.
