Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a thermoplastic resin particle having excellent heat resistance and good sheet moldability by having a vinyl aromatic monomer absorbed in a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer particles suspended in an aqueous medium for polymerization.
CONSTITUTION: The 13W50pts.wt. of a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer particles having 15W30wt% maleic anhydride and an average polymerization degree of 500 or more is suspended in an aqueous medium, and then 87W50pts.wt. of a vinyl aromatic monomer is added to the suspension so as to have the monomer absorbed in the aforesaid resin particles. Then, the suspension is put into polymerization in the presence of a catalyst to obtain a thermoplastic resin particle. During or after the polymerization, a foaming agent is added to obtain an expansible thermoplastic resin. If the amount of the maleic anhydride in the copolymer to be applied is 15wt% or less, the improvement of thermal properties can not be expected, whereas if it exceeds 30wt%, the intrusion of the vinyl aromatic monomer into the styrene- maleic anhydride copolymer becomes difficult.
