Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent damage by a method wherein the spacing between a rotary shaft and a pneumatic bearing is detected, and a highpressure lubricant is injected into the gap when a change has occurred in the detection signal.
CONSTITUTION: Displacement of bearing spacing is monitored by a fine displacement meter 4. With the spacing decreased to below 5μ, and electrical output of abnormal signal generated by the meter 4 opens a solenoid valve 5, so that lubricating oil stored in an accumulator 6 is rapidly injected into the gap between a pneumatic bearing 2 and a rotary shaft 1. Such filling of the gap with lubricating oil protects the bearing against damage. When the abnormal condition has disappeared, the abnormal signal from the meter 4 also disappears, so that the valve 5 closes, supply of lubricating oil is stopped, and the lubricating oil once fed into the gap is purged by air of the pneumatic bearing, establishing the original condition.
