PURPOSE: To easily manufacture the title cpd. having hexagonal system needle crystal structure by contacting a needle crystal basic Mg cpd. to an adequate amt. of alkali in an inert liquid medium undissolving the Mg cpd. under conditions which do not destroy the needle crystal form.
CONSTITUTION: A needle crystal basic Mg cpd. represented by formula I (where An- is a mono- or divalent anion, i.e. n=1 or 2, 0.2≤x≤0.5 and 0<m≤2) is contacted to alkali in a liquid medium inert to the cpd. and practically undissolving it, e.g. water, methanol or acetone without carrying out drying treatment accompanied by release of part or all of water of crystallization of the cpd. under conditions which do not destroy the needle crystal form of the cpd. At this time, the cpd. is contacted to the alkali in an amt. more than about one eq. of anion An- at about 60°C or above or to the alkali in an amt. more than about 1.5 eq. of An- at room temp. or above.
