Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently recover H2S as elemental sulfur from a gas mixt. even if the H2S concn. of an acidic gas is low by separating CO2 and H2S in the mixt. apart from each other and recovering the H2S as elemental sulfur by the Claus reaction.
CONSTITUTION: Gas mixt. 14 of atmospheric press. or above is fed to the bottom of absorption tower 1 and countercurrently contacted to an absorbing soln. fed from the tower 1 top in acidic gas absorption zone A. The treated gas is exhausted 15 out of the system. The deteriorated absorbing soln. is supplied to the top of regeneration tower 2, where it is countercurrently contacted to steam 28 fed from the tower 2 bottom in regeneration zone B to regenerate the soln., which is then drawn out of the tower 2 bottom, cooled, and mostly returned to tower 1. Part of the soln. is supplied 18 to the top of SO2 gas absorption tower 3. Steam is removed by condensation from an acidic gas exhausted from the tower 2 top. Most of the steam-free gas is fed to Claus furnace 6, and part of it to the bottom of Claus reaction tower 4. O2 is supplied to furnace 6 to convert H2S into elemental sulfur by the Claus reaction, and the sulfur is discharged 22. In tower 3 unreacted SO2 and H2S gases from furnace 6 are allowed to be absorbed in part of the regenerated absorbing soln. to exhaust 30 a CO2-enriched gas.
