Abstract

PURPOSE: To control corrosion of negative electrode and improve life expectancy of a cell, by adding phosphate such as metallic pyrophosphate and hexametaphosphate to solid electrolyte containing soluble salt.
CONSTITUTION: A solid electrolyte 2, put between a negative electrode 1 mainly composed of iron powder and a positive electrode 3 mainly composed of mercury oxide is a solid solution of a compound having water of crystallization such as zinc phosphate and soluble salt such as ferric choloride and contains at least one of metallic pyrophosphate, hexametaphosphate, tripolyphosphate, phosphite and hypophosphite. A preferrable method proposed to get this solid electrolyte 2, especially homogeneous one, is to add an aqueous solution of ferric chloride and the said metallic phosphate to zinc phosphate and to dry the mixture.
