PURPOSE:To detect a surface defect of a board body by a simple and inexpensive constitution by providing a white light source, lens system and photo detecting element, and further by arranging three circuits, sampling, comparator and holding circuits. CONSTITUTION:Inspected board body 1, irradiated with projected light from white light source 2, reflects the light 3, which reaches a photoelectric converting element such as photo diode array 5 by way of lens system 4. On detecting reflected light 3, photo diode array 5 supplies a photo current to amplifier 6. Here, respective bits of photo diode array 5 are made by sampling circuit 8 into clock pulses, which are smoothed by comparator 9, and holding circuit 10 maintains this smoothing operation. If the running board body would has rust, struck stain, flaw, etc., alarm unit 11 is put into operation according to variation in the quantity of light to operate a buzzer, thereby announcing the defect of the board body.
