Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent a metallic vapor discharge lamp from losing its transparency and deteriorating by providing protecting member of alkaline resistance on the inner surface of the seal for the lamp and between electrodes and quartz glass of the seal to thereby protect the galss against alkali metal halogenated compound.
CONSTITUTION: Alkaline resistanct protecting member such as, for example, alumina diffusion layer 14 is formed on the outer surface of the portion projected toward the discharging space and the inner surface facing with the outer surface of the electrode shaft 5 in a quartz tube 12. While this metallic vapor discharge lamp is put ON, sodium iodide or the like is stayed in the nearest portion to seals 2, 2 in the bulb 1 at the rears of the main electrodes 3, 3 as the coldest portion of the bulb 1. When the lamp is particularly turned ON at vertical position, the sodium iodide is stayed at the lower portion of the main electrode 3 of lower side.
