CONSTITUTION:Discharge electrodes 2 and 3 are placed facing to each other within a sealed body 1 of an extrahigh pressure mercury discharge lamp. The sealed body 1 is made of a quartz glass containing below 100ppm (by weight) of hydroxyl groups. As a result, if a part 1A of the sealed body 1 is locally heated by the flare of the arc, at the position right over an arc when the discharge lamp comes on in its slant or horizontal attitude, the distortion angle of the part 1A does not exceed 30 deg.. Consequently, any breakdown of the sealed body 1 during lighting can be prevented, and the life of the lamp can be greatly extended.
