Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a good back bead through one pass of back welding on a thick plate with an electron beam welding applied on one side of the weld line and TIG welding on the other side thereof.
CONSTITUTION: A steel plate 4 is welded on one side of the weld line with an electron beam 3 projected from a electro gun 2. At the same time, another welding is made on te back side by a TIG welder 7 maintaining a Ar atmosphere inside a heavy chamber 6 by forming the chamber from a seal material 9. With such a method, spike defective and insufficient penetration of the root section otherwise caused by the electron beam welding can be eliminated with the TIG welding, thus ensuring formation of a good back bead.
