Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare azines useful as intermediates for the preparation of hydrazine or pharmaceuticals, without using nitrile compounds and with little formation of condensation products of aldehydes or ketones, by using organic carbonyl compounds as raw materials.
CONSTITUTION: An organic carbonyl compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are H, ≤12C cycloalkyl, linear or branched alkyl, or 6W12C hydrocarbon residue containing benzene ring optionally having a substituent which is stable in a reaction medium; with the proviso that R1 or R2 is not H; R1 and R2 may form linear or branched 3W7C alkylene), is made to react with H2O2, and ammonium carbonate and/or ammonium bicarbonate under conditions of pH 7W10 and 10W100°C, to prepare azines of formula II, e.g. acetone azine. It is advantageous to add stabilizing agent such as phosphoric acid to a reaction mixture in an amount of 0.01W2 wt.% based on the total reaction mixture.
