Abstract

PURPOSE: Hydrophilic polymers are treated with plasma under atmosphere of oxygen to increase further the hydrophilic properties.
CONSTITUTION: A hydrophilic polymer as polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate or polyvinyl alchol, is treated with plasma under an atmosphere of oxygen with partial pressure of lower than 2×10-2 mmHg, preferably lower than 4×10-3 mm Hg so that the water absorption increases by 10% based on untreated polymer. The gas used to generate plasma is, e.g., helium, argon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, or nitrogen.
EFFECT: The treated hydrophilic polymer is useful in medical application, such as contact lens, artificial trachea, nose, skin or catheter.
