Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform cold start for electro-slag metlting effectively, by use of a consumable electrode provided with a nonconsumable electrode material, e.g., graphite, at its lower end with reduced diameter.
CONSTITUTION: The lower end of a consumable electrode 5 is cut to form a part 6 with reduced diameter. To the diameter-reduced part is attached a nonconsumable electrode made of, e.g., graphite. A high-melting solid slag 9 consisting mainly of CaO and Al2O3 is loaded around the consumable electrode 5. Cooling water is made to flow through a jacket 4, and electricity is applied from a power source 8 to generate are across a gap 11. No adjustment of vertical position of the consumable electrode 5 is required because the graphite 7 hardly consumes and keeps constant form. When the diameter-decreased part 6 melts, the graphite 7 drops to the furnace bottom 2. Lowering the consumable electrode 5 in order to dip its end into slag pool heats the slag pool with Joule heat, melting the consumable electrode.
